Programme Overview
The African Scholarship Programme is designed to support early career researchers from Africa by providing them with the necessary resources to develop their research. The programme fosters collaboration between African and Nordic scholars, contributes to knowledge production about Africa, and strengthens research capacities. Each year, a limited number of scholarships are awarded to qualified candidates.

The programme is open to research projects within the disciplines of Social Sciences and Humanities, with a particular emphasis on contemporary Africa. Scholarship Benefits
Airfare (economy) to and from Sweden
Accommodation in Uppsala for the duration of the programme
Daily subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (approximately 40 USD) for days spent in Uppsala
One-time installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approximately 250 USD)
Access to a shared office space with a desk and computer
Full access to the Nordic Africa Institute Library, as well as Uppsala University Library and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Library
Eligibility Criteria
The African Scholarship Programme is open to:
Full-time staff members of African-based universities or research centers who are enrolled in a doctoral programme and do not have access to an international scholarship.
Postdoctoral researchers who completed their PhD within the last four years.
The programme seeks a fair gender and geographic balance and encourages research on gender issues and women's positions in society.

Research project outline (5 pages), including a detailed research proposal
Work plan (1 page), specifying objectives and expected outcomes during the stay at NAI
A signed reference letter from the applicant’s Head of Department or a senior scholar confirming the current affiliation and field of research
Incomplete applications will not be considered. The application must be submitted in English. Postal applications are also accepted.
