If you are a medical student in the United States and passionate about global health and journalism, the Global Health Media Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to combine your medical knowledge with storytelling skills. This year-long fellowship provides practical training across various media platforms, including print, online, broadcast, and social media. This year-long fellowship, the first of its kind in the U.S., aims to train physician-storytellers who can combat medical misinformation and highlight untold global health stories. Here are the details you need to know.
Program Overview
The Global Health Media Fellowship provides up to 12 months of practical training in journalism, communications, and global health reporting across various media platforms, including print, online, broadcast, and social and digital media. Each fellow participates in three rotations over the course of the fellowship year.
1. Fall Quarter (September - December):
Fellows take courses in Stanford’s Graduate Program in Journalism.
2. Winter: Fellows are embedded at CNN in Atlanta with Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s health reporting team to learn the fundamentals of health reporting and gain hands-on experience.
3. Spring: Fellows conduct a capstone project based on their interests, focusing on developing skills to improve their global health storytelling and mass communication capabilities.
Benefits
A modest travel stipend is awarded in addition to the fellowship stipend. Fellows receive a stipend from CNN during their internship portion.
Goals and Objective
To help physicians engage with journalists, this program was designed to teach fellows:
How journalists and TV medical correspondents select and frame topics, stories, and issues in the field of global health;
Techniques to present and write persuasively about global health, medicine, and science;
How to access new channels and technologies for persuasive communication.
Upon completion, the fellow will produce an in-depth article or other substantive media creation on a global health topic.
The Fellow will return to medical training with the expectation that in addition to treating patients, conducting research or teaching, she or he will also become an advocate and spokesperson for global health issues.
Eligibility Criteria
Current Enrollment: Applicants must be currently enrolled in medical school at an institution in the United States.
Medical Students: The fellowship is open to allopathic medical and osteopathic (D.O.) students. It is not open to residents.
Commitment to Global Health: Candidates must be committed to a career in global health.

1. Application Submission:

Resume/CV
References: Have two or more references, preferably within the field of Global Health and/or journalism and communications, upload their letters of recommendation.
2. Selection:
One fellow is chosen from a pool of students enrolled in U.S. medical institutions committed to a career in global health.
3. Notification:
Successful candidates will be notified by email by the end of June 2025.
