2025 UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship

If you are a woman diplomat passionate about addressing the challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) in international security, applications are now open for the 2025 UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship. Organized by the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), this program aims to equip women diplomats with the knowledge, skills, and networks to engage effectively in multilateral AI discussions related to international peace and security.

 

UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship Summary

UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship Overview

The 2025 UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship is a capacity-building initiative designed to address the underrepresentation of women in international security discussions, particularly in AI governance. The program comprises three key components:


  1. Education: Fellows will receive a comprehensive introduction to AI technologies, their applications in security, and associated governance challenges. Topics include military AI, gender-specific impacts, and multilateral policy frameworks.

  2. Exploration: Participants will interact with experts and stakeholders engaged in AI design, development, and governance, gaining insights into practical applications and global ecosystems.

  3. Networking: The program facilitates connections with diplomats, private sector leaders, and civil society representatives. Fellows will also join UNIDIR’s Expert Network on the Governance of AI in the Military Domain, fostering long-term collaboration.


 

Fellowship Benefits

  1. Full sponsorship for 10 selected participants, covering travel, accommodation, and training costs.

  2. Access to specialized training on AI governance, security applications, and gender perspectives.

ℹ️ Priority for sponsorship will be given to Fellows from developing countries.

 

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship 2025, Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be women diplomats at a junior to mid-career level.

  2. Represent a UN Member State.

  3. Demonstrate a strong command of written and spoken English.

  4. Show interest in security, technology, and gender-related issues.

 

Application Procedure

To apply, candidates must submit the following documents via email: [sectec-unidir@un.org], with the subject line “2025 UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship Application”:


  1. Copy of passport.

  2. Curriculum vitae (maximum two pages).

  3. Two recommendation letters (one from the applicant’s national government or diplomatic representation to the UN).

  4. A one-page letter of interest outlining the applicant’s relevant experience, motivations, and intended use of the knowledge gained during the fellowship.
