Fellowship Overview

About AFRIKA KOMMT!

AFRIKA KOMMT! is a flagship initiative established in 2008 by Germany’s leading businesses to foster long-term partnerships between African professionals and German industries. The programme provides professional training, networking opportunities, and cultural exchange to equip young leaders with the necessary tools to drive innovation and development in Africa. Fellows receive in-depth exposure to German corporate structures, industry-specific knowledge, and leadership training.

 

Programme Structure and Activities

1). Selection and Preparation Phase:

Candidates undergo a rigorous selection process, including an assessment center, before attending preparatory German language courses in their home countries.


2). One-Year Stay in Germany:

  • Intensive German language training

  • Three management training modules (intercultural competencies, leadership, project and change management, conflict management)

  • Eight-month professional fellowship with a German partner company

  • One-week study tour

  • Weekend seminars and networking events

  • Farewell ceremony with the German Federal Foreign Office


3). Alumni Phase:

  • One-week refresher course in Germany or Africa

  • Continued participation in AFRIKA KOMMT! networking events

  • Alumni-led projects and initiatives

Responsibilities and Activities

Fellows are expected to actively engage in corporate projects, leadership development initiatives, and professional mentorship provided by their host companies. They also participate in study tours and networking events aimed at fostering bilateral cooperation between Africa and Germany. After the fellowship, alumni become change agents in their home countries, applying their acquired knowledge to drive economic and social progress.

 

Programme Benefits and Coverage

1). Funding and Allowances:

  • Monthly living allowance of €900 for the first three months and final month

  • Monthly salary of approximately €1,500 gross during the internship

  • One-time relocation allowance of €1,000 upon returning home


2). Travel Costs:

  • Visa and roundtrip airfare to and from Germany

  • Travel expenses for programme-related activities in Germany

  • Coverage of travel costs for the refresher course


3). Accommodation and Insurance:

  • Fully covered accommodation during all programme stages

  • Health, accident, and liability insurance


4). Training and Certification:

  • Intensive German language training

  • Management training modules

  • Certificates upon completion of the fellowship and professional training

 

AFRIKA KOMMT Fellowship Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a citizen of an African country

  • University degree in a relevant field (postgraduate degree preferred)

  • Two to five years of professional experience

  • Excellent English language skills; basic German is an advantage

  • Must be no older than 35 years at the time of application

Application Process

  1. Register an account and Submit an online application via the AFRIKA KOMMT! Online application portal

  2. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an assessment center

  3. Successful candidates will undergo preparatory training, including language courses

  4. Final selection and assignment to German partner companies

  5. Programme commencement in Germany


What Happens Next?

  • After submission, you will receive feedback within 8-12 weeks following the application deadline. If shortlisted, partner companies may contact you for a brief telephone interview.

  • If your application successfully passes the pre-selection stage, you will be invited to attend a two-day assessment centre.

  • The assessment centre consists of tasks, group activities, and presentations that help determine the final selection.

  • Results will be communicated within a few weeks.

  • Successful candidates will then receive an invitation to Germany for a one-year fellowship.

  • The 14th intake of AFRIKA KOMMT! will commence in November 2025 in Germany.
