Program Overview
The AFS Global STEM Academies combine digital and in-person learning, bringing together youth from 15 countries. The program begins with a 12-week virtual e-learning curriculum from home, focusing on global competence skills, social impact, and sustainability. This portion of the program culminates in student-led social impact projects and presentations that address real-world challenges, particularly those related to sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
After completing the virtual curriculum, scholars participate in a 4-week immersive experience in one of the four Academy destinations: Brazil, China, Egypt, or India. During this time, scholars engage in community service, visit local innovative operations, and gain hands-on experience with STEM skills in practice.
The dates of the 2025 in-person Academies are listed below.
Brazil: July 12 – August 8, 2025
China: July 8 – August 7, 2025
Egypt: July 18 – August 17, 2025
India: July 18 – August 17, 2025
Benefits and Coverage
The American Field Service (AFS ) Global STEM Academies scholarships cover all costs associated with the program, including:
Full tuition for the 12-week digital program and 4-week study abroad program.
AFS-arranged travel, including international economy airfare and airport pick-up.
Medical insurance provided by AFS.
Housing arranged by AFS, which may include living with a host family or in dormitories.
Meals provided by host families or as a group by AFS.
24/7 emergency support.
Field trips to activities and sites during the Academy.

AFS Global STEM Academies Eligibility Check
To be eligible for the AFS Global STEM Academies scholarships, applicants must:
Be 15-17.5 years old at the program start date.
Have an interest in STEM, sustainability, and global competencies.
Be able to participate fully in a program conducted entirely in English.
Have the ability and willingness to travel abroad unaccompanied.
Meet the nationality/citizenship or country of legal residence requirements.
Application Process
Applications for the AFS Global STEM Academies scholarships are open until January 15, 2025. Interested applicants should submit their pre-application for initial review.
The AFS team will assess your pre-application to determine if you are eligible to continue the process.
