Centroamérica en Ascenso Fellowship Overview
The Centroamérica en Ascenso Fellowship aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for human rights defenders from Central America. The fellowship includes opportunities to lecture, lead workshops, attend professional and academic conferences, and engage with relevant advocacy efforts in the local and regional community.
What to Expect
Fellows in the non-degree track of the Centroamérica en Ascenso Fellowship at the University of Florida are hosted by the Center for Latin American Studies. They can conduct research using the extensive Latin American Collection, take English courses, audit classes, and collaborate with the Center to design opportunities for networking, mentorship, and skill-building. Fellows work with academic advisors to select courses in Spanish or English (if language requirements are met) and may co-teach with faculty based on qualifications and university needs. They connect with affiliate faculty, local NGOs, and associations to enhance their experience and impact. Each fellow is supported by a dedicated fellowship coordinator.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Centroamérica en Ascenso Fellowship, applicants must demonstrate the following:
Be human rights defenders from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, or Nicaragua.
Have a background in law, journalism, academia, social justice advocacy, or related fields.
Demonstrate a commitment to anti-corruption efforts in their home countries.
⚠️ Regarding English Language Proficiency
Non-degree track fellows are not required to meet a minimum English language score for selection. However, all applicants must take the Duolingo English Test (DET). Based on their DET score, selected fellows may need to enroll in UF’s Intensive English Program during their first semester. Fellowship experiences will involve minimal daily interaction in English.
