Scholarship Overview

The Coimbra Group Universities Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood has been providing young researchers from universities in the European Neighbourhood with the opportunity to spend a short period at a Coimbra Group University since 1999. The main aim of this scholarship program is to enable scholars to undertake research in which they are engaged in their home institution and to help them establish academic and research contacts in Europe. The scholarships are financially supported by the Coimbra Group member universities participating in this program, while the Coimbra Group Office is in charge of the administrative management of the applications.

The following Coimbra Group universities are participating in the 2025 edition of this scholarship programme:

  • Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi (Romania)

  • University of Barcelona (Spain)

  • University of Granada (Spain)

  • University of Graz (Austria)

  • Heidelberg University (Denmark)

  • Istanbul University (Turkey)

  • Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Poland)

  • University of Padova (Italy)

  • University of Poitiers (France)

  • University of Salamanca (Spain)

  • University of Siena (Italy)

  • University of Würzburg (Germany)

 

Eligible Countries

The eligible countries for the 2025 edition are listed hereafter: Albania, Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Republic of Northern Macedonia, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Montenegro, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Russia, Serbia, Syria, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Coimbra Group Universities Scholarship Programme for Young African Researchers 2025-2026 intake, applicants must:

  • Be born on or after 1 January 1990.

  • Be nationals of and current residents in one of the above-listed countries.

  • Be current academic staff members of a university or an equivalent higher education institution located in one of the above-listed countries.

  • Be of postdoctoral or equivalent status, although some institutions may offer opportunities to doctoral students.

  • Be in possession of an acceptance letter/email from the tutor/supervisor with whom the work programme will be undertaken in the host institution. This document is mandatory.

  • Use the Coimbra Group Office electronic application process.

  • Apply for one university only. Multiple applications will not be considered valid.

  • Submit all information in English only.

 

Application Procedure

1. Identify a Supervisor:

Applicants should provide the name and contact details of an academic supervisor in the receiving Coimbra Group University who will supervise their work during their stay abroad. If you do not have any contacts, visit this webpage and scroll down to the end of the page where you can find information for each university from the listed above.


2. Obtain Acceptance Letter:

All applicants are requested to provide a letter/email of acceptance written by the academic supervisor from the host university where you would like to carry out the proposed working plan. The letter should state that the supervisor is willing to work with you in case you obtain a Coimbra Group Scholarship.


3. Complete Application Form:

Fill in the online application form only when you have all the data available (i.e., name of and letter of acceptance by supervisor at Coimbra Group University, etc.). Incomplete applications will be rejected, no exceptions will be made.

The online application is available until 31 March 2025 at midnight (Brussels time).


4. Agree on Dates:

The dates of your stay should be agreed upon between the applicant and the academic supervisor at the Coimbra Group University. Typically, this will be during the academic year 2025/2026.


5. Submit Application:

The online application is available until March 31, 2025, at midnight (Brussels time) on the Coimbra Group website.
