Dorothy Killam Fellowship Overview

The Dorothy Killam Fellowship aims to support scholars of exceptional ability by granting them time to pursue research projects of broad significance and widespread interest. The fellowship is designed to free recipients from teaching and administrative duties, enabling them to dedicate themselves fully to their research initiatives. Between five and eight fellowships are awarded annually, subject to the approval of the Selection Committee and the performance of the fund. The funds are paid to and administered by the Canadian university or research institute where the individual is employed.

 

Fellowship Benefits

Application Procedure

1. Preliminary Research Abstract: Submit a preliminary research abstract through the fellowship portal by April 30, 2025.


2. Institutional Approval: Complete the Killam Approvals Form, obtaining signatures from your Department Head and Dean/Associate Dean (Research). Submit this form to the Research Services Office (RSO) by May 13, 2025.


3. Application Submission:

Begin your application within the NRC online system. Send the following documents to the RSO by May 13, 2025:


  • Research proposal (1,500 words)

  • Candidate’s statement (1,000 words)

  • Killam Approvals Form


4. Final Submission: Upon receipt and review of the above documents, the RSO will obtain the Provost's final approval for your research leave (conditional on award of the Fellowship). The official application deadline is May 22, 2025, at 11:59 PM.
