FAO–Hungarian Government Scholarship Summary

Scholarship Overview

The FAO–Hungarian Government Scholarship Programme, established through an agreement between the FAO and Hungary in 2007, offers high-quality training to professionals from developing and transition countries. The programme supports sustainable development by fostering expertise in aquaculture and animal husbandry engineering, vital fields for global food security and environmental sustainability.

 

Eligible Study Programs and Host Institutions

1. MSc in Aquaculture


  • Host Institution: Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Szent István Campus, Gödöllő

  • Focus: Freshwater fish farming, genetics, nutrition, and integrated aquaculture systems.

  • Credit Requirement: 90 ECTS

  • Language: English


2. MSc in Animal Husbandry Engineering


  • Host Institution: University of Debrecen, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management, Debrecen

  • Focus: Physiology, genetics, nutrition, molecular biology, and gene conservation.

  • Credit Requirement: 120 ECTS

  • Language: English

 

Scholarship Coverage and Benefits

  • Tuition Coverage: Full tuition for the duration of the programme.

  • Accommodation: Dormitory housing provided.

  • Subsistence Costs: Monthly stipend to cover living expenses.

  • Health Insurance: Comprehensive coverage for the duration of the programme.

  • Training Materials: Basic books and notes included.

  • Other Provisions: The scholarship covers only the student’s expenses; family members are not supported.

 

Eligible Countries

The FAO–Hungarian Government Scholarship targets students from the following countries:


Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Angola, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kosovo1, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, North Macedonia, Madagascar, Mali, Myanmar, Republic of Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Namibia, Nigeria, North Korea, Palestine, the Philippines, Republic of Cabo Verde, Serbia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Yemen.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Citizenship: Citizens of one of the eligible countries above.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field.

  • English language: (TOEFL/IELTS or equivalent certification).

  • Age preference: Candidates under 30 years old are prioritized.

  • Academic Excellence: Excellent academic record, motivation, and good health.

 

Application Procedure

Applicants must submit their dossier via email to [REU-Scholarship@fao.org] between 20 January 2025 and 28 February 2025. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.

  • Completed application form (typewritten in English)

  • Recent curriculum vitae

  • Copy of high school/college diploma and transcript

  • English language proficiency certificate

  • Passport copy (showing expiration date and number)

  • Letter of recommendation

  • Statement of motivation

  • Health certificate issued by a medical doctor

  • Certificate of good conduct from local authorities


Selection Process

The selection involves two phases:

1. Pre-screening by FAO, followed by submission to the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture and the respective university.


2. Final selection by the university, including possible English proficiency tests or interviews.
