The FoodBioSystems Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) at University of Reading, UK is inviting applications for up to 22 fully funded PhD studentships, starting in autumn 2025. These opportunities span multiple disciplines, focusing on innovative research within the food chain, agriculture, nutrition, and sustainability.
Key Research Areas
Projects are available across the following fields:
Farmed animal health and welfare
Food safety
Lifelong health
Human nutrition
One Health
Precision agriculture and smart technologies
Reducing waste
Sustainable agricultural systems
Genomics and biotechnology
A total of 38 projects are open, hosted by partner universities: Aberystwyth, Brunel, Cranfield, Lincoln, Queen’s Belfast, Reading, and Surrey.

Eligibility and Applicant Backgrounds
Candidates from diverse scientific backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including:
Agricultural sciences, biotechnology, and data science
Environmental chemistry, microbiology, and ecology
Nutrition, genomics, and AI/machine learning
Applicants must hold (or expect to hold) at least an upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field.
International qualifications and applicants are welcomed, subject to funding eligibility criteria.
Funding and Benefits
The studentships provide:
A tax-free stipend (£19,237 in 2024/25; higher for Brunel University studentships).
Tuition fee coverage.
Comprehensive training, including core skills in food systems, data analysis, and a professional internship.
Part-time registration is also available, with adjustments to the stipend and timeline.
