Project Description

Soft robotics concerns the design and development of compliant structural systems integrated into various robotic systems. This project will explore innovative design and manufacturing methods, and develop novel structural/material systems, in the context of sustainable soft robotics. We are looking for an exceptional individual with a strong science and engineering background and a keen interest in the design, finite element analysis, fabrication, and experimental testing of novel soft robotic structural systems which meet the key requirements of sustainable design and manufacturing.

The PhD student will work closely with other postdoctoral and doctoral researchers within the Creative Design Engineering Lab (Cdel) at Newcastle University. The successful applicant will be based in the newly renovated Stephenson Building, benefiting from comprehensive academic guidance and access to cutting-edge facilities.

 

Eligibility criteria

  1. Minimum 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a subject relevant to the proposed PhD project (mechanical, aerospace, structural, material, or mechatronic engineering, or a related field).

  2. Applicants whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in all sub-skills

  3. International applicants may require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate prior to obtaining their visa and to study on this programme.
