1.PhD Candidate: The Early Modern Economic and Social History Research Project ‘Business as Usual: the informal institutions of merchants in the early modern period
Employment Details:
Gross monthly salary :€ 2,770 - € 3,539
Required background: Research University Degree
Organizational unit: Faculty of Arts
Application deadline: 16 June 2024
Project Description:
This project examines the norms and values of early modern European merchants, as reflected in their correspondence. It moves beyond the traditional focus on trust mechanisms and well-known merchants, instead studying lesser-known or unidentified merchants' 'letter books'. The aim is to uncover informal institutions like norms and customs that influenced their decisions. The research can be diachronic or geographical, with several 17th-century Dutch 'letter books' already identified. Other sources like legal proceedings and notarial deeds can supplement the correspondences. The project encourages the use of digital research methods to ask new questions about the merchants' mindset.
2.PhD Candidate: Developing laser-based spectroscopy systems for gas phase contamination detection in real-life applications
Employment Details:
Gross monthly salary :€ 2,770 - € 3,539
Required background: Research University Degree
Organizational unit: Faculty of Science Application deadline: 1 August 2024
Project Description:
This PhD project focuses on detecting gas-phase contaminants in green hydrogen storage/transfer and semiconductor manufacturing. As a candidate, you'll identify and characterize these contaminants, develop lab setups to mimic application conditions, and design efficient, cost-effective spectroscopy instruments. The research is conducted at the Trace Detection Laboratory (TDLab), using existing instruments and developing new methods for specific contaminants.
Employment Details:
Gross monthly salary :€ 2,770 - € 3,539
Required background: Research University Degree
Organizational unit: Faculty of Science
Application deadline: 09 June 2024
Project Description:
This PhD project aims to develop a center for creating heterostructures from reactive 2D materials like graphene, halides, and transition metal dichalcogenides. These materials have unique properties but are highly reactive. You'll establish a new synthesis method and investigate these materials at ultra-low temperatures, exploring phenomena like superconductivity and charge transport. The Scanning Probe Microscopy group, known for developing specialized instruments and researching black phosphorus, will support this work. Your teaching load may be up to 10% of your time.
Employment Details:
Gross monthly salary :€ 2,770 - € 3,539
Required background: Research University Degree
Organizational unit: Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies
Application deadline: 31 May 2024
Project Description:
As part of your individual project, you will independently read and investigate source texts in their original Arabic language, investigate them in terms of their relation to Avicenna’s main works, and also provide English translations of sections of your source texts as part of your analysis. It is essential that you are able to read Classical Arabic texts and have a good active command of the English language in speech and writing. Knowledge of the history of (late) ancient philosophy, especially the Aristotelian tradition, or medieval philosophy is highly recommended. Knowledge of Avicenna’s philosophy is not immediately required but would obviously be particularly helpful.
As part of the position, which also comes with a yearly travel allowance to participate in academic events and disseminate the results of your own research, you will closely collaborate with the other members of the team in various research, dissemination and outreach activities, as well as organise an academic event yourself in collaboration with the team. This research position carries no teaching obligations.
Employment Details:
Gross monthly salary :€ 2,770 - € 3,539
Required background: Research University Degree
Organizational unit: Faculty of Science
Application deadline: 30 May 2024
Project Description:
This PhD project focuses on understanding cell movement, crucial in health and disease defense. Using specialized microscopes, the team films these processes, creating data-rich videos. However, the limited annotated data makes existing AI techniques less applicable. The group aims to extract insights from these videos by integrating data science, AI, and (bio)physics-based simulations. Two open positions focus on cell movement as a time series and video analysis, respectively. Both projects involve mastering simulation and machine learning, and improving state-of-the-art methods with physics-based simulations.
