Global Africa Translation Fellowship Overview

The Global Africa Translation Fellowship is part of The Africa Institute's African Languages and Translation Program. It supports projects that may include retranslations of classic texts, translations of previously untranslated works, poetry, prose, or critical theory collections. Both works-in-progress and new projects feasible for completion within the grant's timeframe are eligible. The fellowship aims to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps by making significant African texts more widely available.

Application Procedure

To be considered for the Global Africa Translation Fellowship, prepare the following:


1. Curriculum Vitae (CV): A two-page CV detailing institutional affiliation, educational qualifications (including the highest degree received), and key publications or works produced.


2. Project Proposal: A two-page summary (single-spaced, font size 12) outlining the translation project, its significance, justification for retranslation (if applicable), and proposed completion dates.


3. Sample Translation: A 4–5-page sample (double-spaced, font size 12) of the original text and its translation.


4. Copyright Status: If the work is not in the public domain, include a copy of the copyright notice from the original text and a letter from the copyright holder stating that translation rights are available.


Submission Guidelines:

Combine all required documents into a single PDF file named in the format: GATF_LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME.pdf.


Use the same format for the email subject line: GATF_LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME application.


Send the PDF as an email attachment to (applications@theafricainstitute.org)
