Environmental Fellows Program (EFP) Overview
The Environmental Fellows Program (EFP) at Harvard University Center for the Environment is designed to enable recent doctorate recipients to utilize and expand Harvard’s extraordinary resources to tackle complex environmental issues. Fellows work for two years with Harvard faculty members in any school or department, forming a community of researchers that strengthens connections across the University. This fellowship aims to provide a platform for scholars to engage in independent research projects that extend beyond their PhD work and forge new connections within the University.
Research topics can span across fields such as sciences, economics, law, government, public policy, public health, medicine, design, and the humanities
Fellowship Benefits
Participants in the EFP will receive:
A salary of $90,000 per year
Employee health insurance eligibility
Up to $2,500 relocation reimbursement
$2,500 annual allowance for travel and professional expenses
Access to office or lab space at Harvard
Participation in a co-curricular program including biweekly dinners with Harvard faculty and a speaker from amongst the Harvard faculty
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the EFP, applicants must:
Have received a doctorate or comparable terminal degree (in any field) between May 2021 and August 2025
Candidates may have received their degrees at any university in the world. Foreign nationals are eligible for fellowships
Be proficient in English
Propose a research project that represents an independent line of inquiry, extending beyond their PhD work
Secure a commitment from one or more Harvard faculty members to serve as a mentor and provide office or lab space
Be prepared to commit to work at Harvard for the full two years of the fellowship
Application Procedure
Interested qualified candidates can submit their applications online through the designated online application portal.

CV including list of publications;
Detailed research proposal where applicants should explain their specific reasons for applying to a Harvard residential environmental fellowship (maximum of five pages, references counted separately).
Up to three publications/writing samples
Three letters of reference, including one from the applicant’s dissertation adviser
A letter of support from the applicant’s host committing to serve as a mentor and explaining his or her commitment to the proposed research, including the provision of office or lab space.
