Program Overview

The IIJ Research Laboratory conducts advanced research in Internet technologies and collaborates with the WIDE Project. Interns will work on cutting-edge research projects, gaining valuable hands-on experience in networking, cybersecurity, data analysis, and software development. This internship provides an opportunity to contribute to ongoing research efforts, propose new ideas, develop tools, and conduct simulations. Interns will have direct access to experienced researchers, fostering both professional and academic growth.

 

Available Projects and Qualifications

Interns will work closely with IIJ researchers on selected projects, contributing to research, developing software tools, analyzing data, and conducting experiments. The internship aims to provide a dynamic and immersive experience, allowing interns to enhance their technical and problem-solving skills. The projects are outlined below.


1. Traffic Measurement and Data Analysis

  • Research on Internet traffic trends using IIJ’s datasets

  • Develop broadband QoE measurement tools and monitoring solutions

  • Qualifications: Computer networking, UNIX systems, programming, data analysis, machine learning, statistics


2. Library Operating System

  • Develop a feature-rich network stack using a library OS approach

  • Performance benchmarking and container runtime integration

  • Qualifications: C programming, Linux kernel development, networking


3. Security and Fault-Tolerance

  • Improve security and reliability in distributed systems

  • Topics include consensus mechanisms and Trusted Execution Environments

  • Qualifications: C/C++, Rust, P4, distributed systems, networking


4. Internet Health Report

  • Enhance IIJ’s Internet Health Report (IHR) for real-time monitoring

  • Data analysis, visualization, and front-end/back-end development

  • Qualifications: Python, JavaScript, networking, data analysis


5. External Data Compression

  • Develop parallel data compression algorithms in Rust

  • Focus on efficiency in memory-constrained environments

  • Qualifications: Rust, concurrent computing, distributed systems


6. Semi-Automated Optimization Framework

  • Automate problem-solving for optimization tasks

  • Topics include resource allocation and constraint programming

  • Qualifications: Julia, operational research, metaheuristics

 

Financial Arrangements and Benefits

  1. Monthly Salary: 250,000 JPY

  2. Taxes: 20.42% tax deduction for non-residents

  3. Flight: Round-trip ticket arranged and paid by IIJ

  4. Accommodation: Furnished apartment arranged and paid by IIJ

  5. Commuting Allowance: Covered

  6. Insurance: Employee accident compensation included (social insurance not applicable)

 

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Must be officially enrolled at a university during the internship

  2. Correspondence course students are not eligible

  3. Strong academic background in the relevant research field

  4. Good English communication skills
