These prestigious scholarships which are part of The Australian Government's International Research Training Program (iRTP) Scholarships scheme are designed to support outstanding international students pursuing research in a wide range of disciplines. These scholarships provide financial support to outstanding candidates pursuing a Master of Research (MRes) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in any field of study at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

Scholarship Overview

The International Research Training Program (iRTP) is an Australian Government-funded scholarship administered by Macquarie University. It aims to attract exceptional international students to undertake graduate research in alignment with Macquarie’s Strategic Research Framework.


The International Macquarie Research Excellence Scholarship Program (iMQRES) is a university-funded initiative to support high-caliber international students pursuing research in priority areas of strategic importance to Macquarie University.


Applicants for the iRTP are automatically considered for the iMQRES in the same application round. Both scholarships are highly competitive and focus on academic merit, research potential, and alignment with the university’s research priorities.

 

Scholarship Benefits

  1. Tuition Fee Offset: Covers tuition fees for up to three years.

  2. Living Allowance Stipend: $38,500 per annum (2025 rate) for up to three years.

  3. Travel Concessions: Local transport benefits for iRTP recipients.

  4. Additional Funding: Potential for stipend top-ups and allowances for fieldwork, equipment, and other research-related expenses.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Be a citizen of a country other than Australia or New Zealand.

  2. Intend to reside in Sydney during their studies.

  3. Plan to undertake a full-time MRes or PhD in Session 2, 2025.

  4. Meet admission requirements for the MRes or PhD, including English language proficiency.

  5. Hold a valid visa to commence onshore studies in Session 2, 2025.

  6. Have completed their degree if applying for a PhD.


Ineligibility

  • Are currently enrolled in a progressing Macquarie program.

  • Have already commenced a graduate research program at Macquarie before 1 January 2025.

  • Are receiving another full scholarship covering tuition and stipend.

  • Have already completed a research degree at the same or higher level.

 

Application Procedure

To be considered for Macquarie Research Excellence Scholarship Program (iMQRES) Scholarships and iRTP Scholarships, follow these steps:


1. Online application

Submit your application via Macquarie University’s online portal, selecting “International Research Scholarship” as the scholarship type.


2. Supervision Letter

Provide confirmation of supervision from a Macquarie University researcher (mandatory for certain faculties).


3. Documents

Ensure all required documents are included, such as:

  • Academic transcripts.

  • Proof of English language proficiency.

  • Research proposal.

  • Evidence of prior research experience (e.g., thesis abstract, publications, conference presentations).
