Fellowship Overview

The Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowship is open to Qualified researchers from all countries. It supports early- and mid-career researchers dedicated to advancing the learning and development of children and youth worldwide. The fellowship encourages interdisciplinary work and projects that address variability in learning, promote evidence-based practices, and scale up effective education policies.


Particular Areas of Focus and Questions

Particularly encouraged to apply are scholars who seek to combine multiple levels of analysis and engage in interdisciplinary work. A special focus lies on work to understand and embrace variability in learning; promote the generation, transfer, and practical application of evidence on human learning and development or increase the capacity to scale up effective education policies and practices.


The Jacobs Foundation is especially interested in the following questions, which are aligned with its 'Advancing research on learning variability' research agenda 2030:

  • How do variations in individuals and contextual factors influence learning and development and learning outcomes?

  • How can we produce interventions that reduce growing inequalities in children’s learning and overcome disparities in the impacts of digital technologies?

  • How can we address the role of data to help learners and teachers make informed decisions about their learning and teaching?

Eligibility Criteria

  1. PhD Degree: Must hold a PhD degree or have their thesis accepted for defense before the application deadline.

  2. Recency: PhD must have been obtained within the past 10 years, excluding documented parental leave.

  3. Employment: is employed at an institution of higher education or research institute.

  4. Commitment: is committed to engaging with the Jacobs Foundation and the Fellowship Network and contributing to the Foundation’s activities.

  5. Research Focus: The research project must align with the foundation's focus on improving learning and development outcomes for children and youth.
