JSPS-UNU Fellowships Overview
The JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship aims to foster advanced research in sustainability while contributing to the research priorities of UNU and JSPS. Fellows work under the supervision of a host researcher and may explore research themes aligned with one of the following areas:

Eligibility Criteria
A PhD awarded on or after April 2, 2019 (extensions for parental leave apply).
Citizens of countries with diplomatic ties to Japan (Japanese nationals and permanent residents are ineligible).
Applicants with prior JSPS fellowships are not eligible.
Fluency in English; additional language skills are advantageous.
Application Procedure
1. Secure agreement with a host researcher
Host researcher must be confirmed before applying for the fellowship. Applicants are responsible for finding and negotiating an agreement with a host researcher at a Japanese institution as the UNU-IAS Fellowship Committee cannot support the process. Furthermore, UNU-IAS researchers are not eligible to become host researchers.

2. Complete and submit the application form
After securing an agreement with an eligible host institution/researcher in Japan, you can begin your application by filling the online application form.
During your application you will be asked to provide information on the following:
Academic Background: Doctoral degree details, abstract, significant research achievements, publications (up to 10), and English proficiency evidence.
Research Proposal: Research area, title, detailed proposal (min. 1,000 words), career aspirations, and alignment with fellowship requirements.
Host Researcher: Name, position, organization, contact details, and explicit consent from a confirmed host in Japan.
References: Details of two referees, including name, position, organization, and contact information.
Declaration: Certification of accurate information and agreement to submit a doctoral diploma by July 2025 (if not yet awarded).
Additional Details: Past stays in Japan, previous applications or awards under JSPS, and how you learned about the fellowship.
⚠️ A confirmed host researcher is mandatory for submission.
Review and Selection
The UNU-IAS Fellowship Committee will shortlist candidates for interviews, following which nominations will be made to JSPS. Selected fellows will then submit an official application to JSPS for final approval.
Additional Information
Research must be policy-relevant and address sustainability challenges.
Fellows are expected to reside in Japan for the entire duration of the fellowship.
