If you are a young African leader passionate about innovation and technology, applications are now open for the 2025 Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Arizona State University (ASU). This prestigious scholarship provides an opportunity for African students to pursue graduate degrees online while receiving in-person support in Rwanda.

 

Scholarship Summary

  • Location: Online with in-person support in Kigali, Rwanda

  • Host Institution: Arizona State University (ASU)

  • Study Level: Graduate (Master's Degrees)

  • Language of Instruction: English

  • Funding Type: Fully Funded

  • Duration: Two years

  • Application Deadline: March 9, 2025

  • Start Date: Fall 2025

  • Eligible to: African citizens aged 18-33 with an undergraduate degree earned by July 2025

 

Program Overview

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at ASU aims to empower young African leaders by equipping them with skills in innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship. From 2025 to 2030, the program will provide 160 graduate scholarships. Scholars will study online while receiving in-person academic support and wrap-around services through Kepler College in Rwanda. Scholars will also enjoy a A fully funded two-month summer program at ASU in the United States between the first and second year.

Scholars can pursue the following online graduate degrees at ASU:

- College of Global Futures

- W.P. Carey School of Business

- Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation

- Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering

 

Scholarship Benefits and Coverage

The scholarship provides comprehensive financial and academic support, including:

  1. Full tuition coverage for the two-year program

  2. On-campus accommodation during an intensive summer experience at ASU

  3. Leadership development programs and mentorship

  4. Community engagement activities

  5. A fully funded two-month summer program at ASU in the United States between the first and second year


Value of the Scholarship

The Scholarship will cover the following:

  • Costs incurred for visa application processing

  • Costs incurred for English language tests

  • Costs incurred for program application

  • Airfare to and from Kigali, Rwanda

  • Full tuition, books and fees

  • Food and Living stipend

  • Medical expenses

  • Housing

  • Participation in Scholarship programming

 

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be African citizens

  • Be between 18 and 33 years old

  • Have an undergraduate degree by July 2025

  • Have a strong academic record, leadership experience, and commitment to community service

  • Meet ASU’s academic and English proficiency requirements

  • Not have started or completed a graduate degree before August 2025

  • Be willing to reside in Kigali, Rwanda for the program’s duration

 

Application Procedure

Interested candidates must complete an online application through the official online application portal before the deadline on March 9, 2025. Required documents include:

  1. Academic transcripts and certificates

  2. Proof of English proficiency

  3. Personal statement outlining leadership experience and career goals

  4. Letters of recommendation
