The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at CMU Africa is a transformative initiative designed to support highly talented, service-oriented young people who face significant social and economic barriers to opportunity. Established in 2016, the program is part of a global network of 33 partners committed to developing Africa's young leaders. The program focuses on providing holistic support, career preparation, leadership development, and opportunities for giving back to the community. Scholars pursue Master of Science degrees in Information Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Engineering Artificial Intelligence at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Africa, Rwanda, and upon completion, they are equipped to lead meaningful change in their communities and contribute to the continent's development.
MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at CMU Africa Summary
1. Eligibility:
Open to African students interested in pursuing a Master of Science degree in
Information Technology,
Electrical and Computer Engineering,
Engineering Artificial Intelligence.
2. Funding:
The scholarship is fully-funded and covers
Application preparation support
Tuition and fees
Health insurance
Travel and basic living expenses
Project and entrepreneurship support.
3. Career Preparation:

Eligibility Criteria
Citizenship: Must be a citizen of an African country.
Academic Background: Must have a strong academic record and meet the admission requirements for a Master of Science degree in Information Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Engineering Artificial Intelligence at CMU Africa (see here).
Leadership Potential: Demonstrate leadership qualities and a commitment to giving back to the community.
Financial Need: Exhibit significant financial need that would otherwise prevent them from pursuing higher education.
Commitment: Show a strong desire to contribute to the economic and social development of Africa upon graduation.
Application Guide
The application process for the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at CMU Africa involves several steps:
1. Submit an Online Application
You need to fill out the online application form available on the CMU Africa. This form will require information and documents about your academic background, leadership potential, and commitment to giving back to your community.
2. Competency Tests:
After submitting your online application, you will be required to complete competency tests. These tests assess your skills and suitability for the program as well as your English language proficiency.
3. Admission to CMU-Africa:
You must obtain admission to CMU-Africa by meeting the academic requirements for a Master of Science degree in Information Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Engineering Artificial Intelligence.
4. Scholars Selection Committee Review:
Once you have submitted your application and completed the competency tests, the Scholars Selection Committee will review your application and select awardees based on university policies and Procedures.
5. Notification:
If selected, you will be notified of your acceptance into the program and the scholarship award by April-May 2025.
