Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Citizenship: Must have U.S. citizenship and reside in Maryland, Virginia, or the District of Columbia. If applying from another state, please check your local consulate for details.
Travel Requirements: Must be able to travel to the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C. for the First Screening and to obtain a visa.
Age: Must have been born between April 2, 1995, and April 1, 2007.
Academic Status: Must be an undergraduate student majoring in Japanese language or Japanese culture and have studied Japanese Studies at a university for at least one year by September 1, 2025.
Return Requirement: Must return to their home country and continue their studies at their home institution immediately after the scholarship period ends.
Language Proficiency: Applicants must have sufficient Japanese language ability to receive education at a Japanese university.

February 25, 2025: written examination in person at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C
Early March 2025: interviews Conducted based on examination results
Late March 2025: Notification of results for the first screening.
Late May 2025: Notification of results for the secondary (MEXT) screening.
July 2025: Notification of scholarship recipient and university placement.
August 2025: Travel arrangements to Japan are made for scholarship recipients.
September or October 2025: Departure for Japan and beginning of the scholarship period.
