NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) Overview

The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) provides Fellows with the opportunity to conduct advanced research aligned with NASA's missions in space and Earth sciences. Fellows collaborate with leading scientists at NASA Centers, NASA Headquarters, or NASA-affiliated research institutes, contributing to projects of national importance. The program comprises two components:

1. NASA Postdoctoral Research Program:

Fellows conduct independent research in areas such as astrophysics, Earth science, aeronautics, biology, astrobiology, cosmo-chemistry, heliophysics, planetary science, and technology development.

2. NASA Postdoctoral Management Program:

Fellows gain experience in the management of scientific programs, working with NASA program scientists on various aspects of research and analysis program management.

Appointments are up to three years in duration, providing ample time to contribute significantly to NASA's research objectives.

Program Benefits and Financial Arrangements

  • Stipend: Postdoctoral Fellows receive a starting stipend of $70,000 per year, with potential supplements for high cost-of-living areas and specific academic specialties. Senior Postdoctoral Fellows' stipends are based on location, experience, and career achievements.

  • Health Insurance: NASA covers approximately 85% of the health insurance premium for individual or family coverage through ORAU, with the Fellow responsible for the remaining portion.

  • Professional Travel Allowance: Fellows are allocated $10,000 per appointment year to support travel to conferences, meetings, field sites, observatories, or required training directly related to their research projects. Unused funds carry over to the following appointment period.

  • Relocation Expenses: Reimbursement for relocation expenses, including transportation, shipment of household goods within the United States or unaccompanied baggage from a foreign country, temporary lodging, and per diem, is provided. Reimbursements are dependent on factors such as the Fellow’s original city and country of residence, number of dependents, and mode of transportation, and are governed by federal travel regulations and the ORAU Travel Policy.
