SEES Summer Intern Program Summary

Program Overview

The SEES Summer Internship Program is designed to expose high school students to NASA-supported research in Earth and space sciences. The program consists of both virtual and in-person components, allowing interns to work with subject matter experts from NASA and UT Austin. Participants complete online modules and engage in project-specific work under the guidance of mentors.


Program Structure and Activities

1. Distance Learning Modules:

  • Earth and Space Science (May 1–July 1)

  • Python Programming (optional unless required for specific projects)


2. Virtual Work:

  • June–July 5: Project-specific activities guided by mentors


3. On-Site Internship:

  • July 6–July 19: Hands-on research, field investigations, and evening sessions at UT Austin CSR

  • Includes supervised housing and local transportation


4. Virtual SEES Science Symposium:

  • July 21–22: Interns present their research to NASA scientists, family members, and guests

 

Project Themes

1. Earth and Space Research:

  • Astronaut photography of Earth

  • Astronomy research using citizen science data

  • Planetary geology and comparisons of Earth to other celestial bodies


2. Climate Research:

  • Environmental changes with satellite altimetry

  • GRACE satellite data analysis for water resources and climate impacts


3. Engineering:

  • Designing high-altitude balloons

  • In-space refueling concepts

  • Supersonic aircraft design (X-59)


4. Mission Design:

  • Mars rover resource utilization

  • Lunar exploration and habitation

  • Aerospace engineering payload design


5. Technology:

  • Robotics and programming challenges (Artemis ROADS)

  • Air quality monitoring through citizen science

 

Program Funding and Benefits

  1. Fees Covered: No program fee

  2. Housing and Meals: Provided for on-site interns

  3. Local Transportation: Provided for on-site activities

  4. Travel Scholarships: Limited funding available for travel to Austin

  5. Certification: NASA certificate of completion upon successful participation

 

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Current high school sophomores or juniors (rising juniors and seniors)

  2. Must be 16 years old by July 5, 2025

  3. U.S. citizenship required

  4. Strong interest in STEM fields

  5. Ability to complete online modules before July 1, 2025

 

SEES Summer Intern Program Application Procedure

1. Online Application:

Interested qualified candidates can submit their applications through [SEES Application Portal]. Your application typically includes essay questions, an introduction video, and a recommendation form.


2. Application Materials:

A complete application for the SEES Program consists of:

  • Essays: Answer questions about academic interests, STEM experiences, and extracurricular skills.

  • Recommendation Form: Submitted by a teacher, counselor, or youth leader (due March 1, 2025). Download here a Sample Letter of Recommendation form.

  • Transcript or Report Card: Unofficial copy uploaded with the application.

  • Introduction Video: Share who you are and your interest in the program (link submission required).


3. Selection Process:

Applicants are evaluated based on academic records, essays, recommendation form, and interest in STEM. Notifications will be emailed around May 1, 2025.
