SBW Berlin Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Nationality: From a developing region (e.g., Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, South America).

  2. Age: Between 18 and 30 years old.

  3. Academic Background: A minimum grade equivalent to 2.0 on the German grading scale for the previous obtained degree

  4. Social Commitment: Proven experience in non-profit or social work supported by a recommendation letter from a relevant organization.

  5. Financial Need: Household income must not exceed the average income for the applicant’s home country.

  6. Residency: Must not have lived in Germany for more than 18 months before applying.

  7. Enrollment Status: Not already funded by another scholarship (except for BAföG).

  8. Academic status: Applying before starting university or enrolled in the first, second, or third semester of a bachelor’s or master's program.

  9. Family residency: No first-degree family members who reside permanently in Germany

  10. Holders of a student visa for Germany or a residence permit with the purpose of taking up or carrying out a course of study in Germany are eligible to apply.

 

Expectations towards incoming fellows or scholarship recipients

  • Proactive development of social projects during the study period (2 to 8 hours of work per week are planned for the social project).

  • Good academic performance in each semester supported.

  • Active participation in regular project meetings and workshops at SBW Berlin

  • Writing project reports

  • Preparing and implementing talks or presentations on the projects

  • Transparency and clear communication regarding professional goals

  • In the event of discontinuation of studies or the project as well as in case of remaining in Germany: Start of repayment plan 3 months after end of studies or funding period in 12 monthly installments.

 

Application Procedure

1. Initial Application:

  • Submit a recommendation letter from a non-profit organization or social institution in your home country.

  • If deemed suitable, you will receive access to the application portal.

The letter must be written by a non-profit organization or social institution in your home country. It should explain:

  • The connection between your chosen course of study and the organization’s goals.

  • Your past and future responsibilities within the organization.

  • How the course of study and your social project will contribute to the organization’s objectives.

2. Required Documents (upon receiving application portal access)

  • Proof of financial need (e.g., income statements).

  • Admission letter from a Berlin or Potsdam university (if available).

  • Language proficiency certificate for the program’s language of instruction.


3. Selection Process:

  • Phase 1: Review of recommendation letters.

  • Phase 2: Evaluation of academic records, financial need, and social commitment.

  • Phase 3: Interview to discuss project plans and assess suitability.


Additional Provisions

  • Funding Continuity: Scholarship renewal is contingent upon academic performance, project progress, and compliance with program requirements.
