Swansea University PhD Scholarship 2024-2025 for UK students

Swansea University

If you’re passionate about challenging mainstream notions and contributing to cutting-edge research in the fields of Polymer and Glyco Chemistry, Biomaterials, Antimicrobials, this opportunity could be an excellent fit for you!

Swansea University is offering a fully funded

PhD scholarship under the EPSRC and Swansea University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering. This scholarship focuses on “Patchy Sweet Bullets Against Bacteria,” an interdisciplinary project at the intersection of polymer and glyco chemistry, biomaterials, and antimicrobials.

Project Description:

This interdisciplinary research project aims to address the phenotypic heterogeneity within bacterial populations. Despite lacking adhesive lectins, bacteria can still bind to cells and cause infections. The project focuses on **engineering heterogeneous glycosystems with patchy attributes** to selectively target diverse bacterial populations with a high selectivity index.

The successful candidate will employ techniques from polymer and glycochemistry* to create these patchy glycosystems. Thorough characterization using SEM, AFM, and TEM will be conducted in the modern University laboratory. The efficacy of these materials will be tested against different bacterial strains at the Institute of Life Sciences at Swansea University. The interdisciplinary supervisory team, led by experts in chemistry, natural products, and microbiology, will provide comprehensive training for the candidate.

Eligibility:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Upper Second Class honours or overseas bachelor’s degree deemed equivalent to UK honours (by UK ECCTIS) and achieved a grade equivalent to UK Upper Second Class honours in chemistry or a related subject, OR master’s degree with a minimum overall grade at ‘Merit’ in chemistry or a related subject (or Non-UK equivalent as defined by Swansea University).

  • Provide evidence of your English Language proficiency.

  • This scholarship is open to applicants eligible to pay tuition fees at the UK rate only, as defined by UKCISA regulations.

Funding information:

This scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees and an annual stipend at £19,237.

Additional research expenses will also be available.
