TDR Master's Scholarship in Public Health Implementation Research 2025 at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM)

If you are a researcher from a low- or middle-income country (LMICs) in the WHO South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions looking to specialize in Implementation Research (IR) for infectious diseases of poverty, applications are now open for the TDR Postgraduate Scholarship at the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia, for the 2025–2027 academic year.


This fully funded Master's in Public Health (MPH) programme is designed to strengthen IR capacity using a One Health approach, addressing global health challenges such as epidemics, disease control, climate change, and antimicrobial resistance. Details in this article.

Programme Overview

The TDR Postgraduate Scholarship at UGM aims to train health professionals and researchers in Implementation Research (IR) to address public health challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The programme helps scholars develop skills to:

  • Identify and resolve health system barriers in disease control

  • Conduct research on infectious diseases of poverty

  • Strengthen policy and practice implementation

  • Address global health issues such as epidemics, climate change, and antimicrobial resistance


Scholars will receive high-quality training, conduct their thesis research on IR, and join IR Connect, an international alumni network that supports professional development and networking.


Study Areas

As a part of the MPH, the postgraduate training will comprise modules relevant to a career in IR, a growing field that supports the identification of health system bottlenecks and approaches to addressing them. It is particularly useful in LMICs, where many health interventions do not reach those who could be benefitting from them. The goal of this training scheme is to strengthen the capacity of researchers to gather evidence-based knowledge using sound methodology to incorporate into policies and practices in LMICs.

 

Scholarship Benefits

The TDR Scholarship covers all major study-related expenses, including:

  • Full tuition fees for the Master’s in Public Health at UGM

  • Round-trip airfare from the scholar’s home country to Indonesia

  • Basic medical and accident insurance during the study period

  • Monthly stipend to cover living costs in Yogyakarta

  • Research project support including funding for data collection in the scholar’s home country

  • Indonesian language course to support integration at UGM

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be nationals and residents of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the WHO South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions

  • Be under 37 years old at the time of application

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00

  • Demonstrate English proficiency:

-Accept score of at least 268

-TOEFL score of at least 550

-IELTS score of at least 5.0

  • Be currently employed by an academic or research institution, non-profit organization, or Ministry of Health in an LMIC

  • Have a strong interest in Implementation Research and the control of infectious diseases

  • Identify a local supervisor/mentor before starting the programme

To apply, candidates must complete two separate applications:

International applicants must register and apply via UGM’s Admission Portal, selecting "TDR Postgraduate Scholarship for Batch 7" under the MPH programme.

Indonesian applicants must apply through UM UGM.

Required Documents:

  • Completed Master’s programme application (submitted online)

  • Scholarship application form (submitted via email)

  • Proof of nationality and residency (passport or national ID)

  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  • Statement of motivation explaining research interests in Implementation Research

  • Letters of recommendation (academic and professional references)

  • Proof of employment at a relevant organization

  • Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or AcEPT scores)


Selection Process and Timeline

  • Application opens: February 11, 2025

  • Deadline for submission: April 20, 2025

  • Selection results announced: May 31, 2025

  • Academic programme starts: Mid-August 2025


Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview and further assessment before final selection.
