Scholarship Overview

The Bartlett Promise Sub-Saharan Africa Master’s Scholarship is designed to enable students from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue their studies at UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment. The scholarship covers full overseas tuition fees and provides a generous annual allowance to cover living and study expenses. Scholarship benefits

The Bartlett Promise Sub-Saharan Africa Master’s Scholarship is fully Funded scholarship that provides awardees with the following benefits:

  • Full overseas tuition fees are waived

  • An annual allowance of £16,008 to cover living and study expenses

  • Round-trip airfare to/from the UK

  • UK Study Visa costs

  • English language assessment costs,

  • Health test costs and NHS Immigration Health Supplement charge covered

 

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for The Bartlett Promise Sub-Saharan Africa Master’s Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Nationality: Nationals and residents of a Bartlett-approved list of Sub-Saharan African countries (see below)

  2. Residency: Residents of an eligible Sub-Saharan African country.

  3. Admission Offer: Applicants must have an offer of admission to a Bartlett master’s course.

  4. Citizenship: Applicants must not hold British or dual British citizenship.

  5. Financial Need: Applicants must demonstrate financial need as assessed by UCL.


ℹ️ Additional Requirements: Applicants are encouraged to meet at least one of the following additional criteria:

  • Be a forced migrant

  • Be the first generation in the family to attend university at undergraduate level

  • Be the first generation in the family to attend university at postgraduate level

Prospective students who are nationals of:

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Republic of Congo, Cote D’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia (including Somaliland), South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

 

Eligible Study Fields

The Bartlett Promise Sub-Saharan Africa Master’s Scholarship is available for postgraduate taught master’s courses in the following fields:

  • Architecture

  • Biosciences, Energy, and Environment

  • Construction and Project Management

  • Development Planning

  • Environmental Design

  • Real Estate

  • Urban Design and City Planning

  • Urban Studies and Planning


These fields are part of UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment, and the scholarship aims to support students pursuing studies in these areas.

 

Application Process

1. Apply for Admission: Prospective students must first apply for admission to a Bartlett master’s course. Applications usually open on October each year.


2. Receive Admission Offer: Applicants will receive an admission letter for a Bartlett master’s course by December 2024.


3. Apply for the Scholarship: Once an admission offer is received, applicants can apply for the Bartlett Promise Sub-Saharan Africa Scholarship between 14 February and 28 March 2025.
