The Rest & Resilience Fellowship by Reporters Without Borders 2025

Applications are now open for The Rest & Resilience Fellowship offered by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The Rest & Resilience Fellowship is a joint initiative by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the taz Panter Foundation, designed to support journalists from countries with restricted freedom of press and information. Since 2015, this fellowship has provided a much-needed respite for journalists facing challenging working conditions, allowing them to recover and rejuvenate while expanding their professional and personal horizons.


Program Overview

The fellowship invites two journalists annually to Berlin for a six-month period, from May 1st to October 31st, 2025. During their stay, fellows take a break from their daily obligations to focus on personal development and professional reorientation. The program offers a range of workshops, networking opportunities, and individual psychosocial counseling to help participants regain their strength and return to their home countries with renewed energy and fresh perspectives.


Rest & Resilience Fellowship Benefits

The fellowship covers several expenses to ensure a smooth and productive stay in Berlin:

  • Visa and travel costs

  • Furnished apartment in Berlin

  • Travel health insurance for the six-month period

  • Monthly grant of €1,000

  • Psychological support and workshops on digital safety training, stress management, and more

  • Professional journalistic and/or personal training opportunities

 

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Rest & Resilience Fellowship, applicants must:

  1. Be professional journalists from countries with restricted freedom of press and information.

  2. Have a firm idea of how the six-month fellowship in Berlin can positively impact their current working situation.

  3. Have several years of relevant work experience as a journalist.

  4. Be able to communicate well in English in a professional context.

  5. Have a valid passport for at least twelve months or the ability to renew it independently.

  6. Be in good health to handle longer travel and the six-month stay in Berlin.

  7. Be willing to return to their home country after the fellowship period.

 

Application Process

Applications for the Rest & Resilience Fellowship are submitted through RSF's online system. Applicants must work with their research supervisor to complete the necessary forms and submit their applications by the institution-specific deadlines. Institutions then select and submit the top applications to RSF.
