Program Details
The TWAS-SN Bose Postdoctoral Fellowships are available at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Science in Kolkata, India. They are intended for postdoctoral research in the physical sciences for a period of six to twelve months.
The Centre conducts research in various fields including:
1). Physical Sciences: This includes studies on linear and non-linear spectroscopy, ultrafast molecular processes,nanomaterials, superconductivity, and quantum many-body physics among others.
2). Mathematical and Quantum Physics: This includes research on quantum field theory, mathematical physics, non-linear dynamics, and quantum gravity among others.
3). Astrophysics and Cosmology: This includes research on cosmology, relativistic astrophysics, and astro chemistry.
The Centre provides a monthly stipend to cover living costs and food, and on-campus accommodation is provided. However, the stipend does not cover comprehensive health insurance. A small contribution is deducted for a Contributory Medical Scheme which offers partial reimbursement of medical costs incurred in Kolkata. All fellows must have their own medical insurance to cover emergencies.
The language of instruction at the Centre is English. Applicants can find their prospective host supervisor and their area of research on the Centre's website.
Eligibility
Applicants for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:
Be a maximum age of 45 years on 31 December of the year of application.
Be nationals of a developing country (other than India).
Must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or any developed country.
Be regularly employed in a developing country (other than India) and hold a research assignment there.
Hold a PhD degree in physics, mathematics or physical chemistry or in any branch of life sciences.
Be accepted by a department of the S.N. Bose National Centre. Prospective applicants are advised to visit the S.N. Bose National Centre's website (www.bose.res.in) and seek to find a potential supervisor under whom they would like to pursue their research and contact them. In contacting the Dean (Academic Programme), applicants must accompany their request for a preliminary acceptance letter with copy of their CV and a research proposal outline. See sample preliminary acceptance letter that can be downloaded below or included in the online application form.
Provide evidence of proficiency in English, if medium of education was not English;
Provide evidence that s/he will return to her/his home country on completion of the fellowship;
Not take up other assignments during the period of her/his fellowship;
Be financially responsible for any accompanying family members.
