The UN International Law Fellowship Overview

The Fellowship Programme is a comprehensive summer course designed to provide in-depth training on core topics of international law. Participants will attend lectures and seminars led by distinguished scholars and practitioners and engage in interactive discussions to foster collaboration and understanding.

 

Structure and Curriculum

  • Morning sessions: Public international law lectures at The Hague Academy of International Law.

  • Afternoon sessions: Seminars and discussions organized by the Codification Division.

  • International responsibility

  • International peace and security

  • Peaceful settlement of international disputes

  • Diplomatic and consular law

  • Law of the sea

  • International trade law

ℹ️ Participants will receive extensive training materials and are required to attend all sessions to receive a certificate of completion.

 

Financial Arrangements

  1. Full coverage of travel expenses in economy class.

  2. Accommodation during the programme.

  3. Medical insurance for the duration of the fellowship.

  4. Training materials and registration fees for The Hague Academy's public international law session.

  5. A stipend to cover living expenses.

ℹ️ NOTE: Self-funded positions are also available. These participants are responsible for all associated costs, but they will receive free training materials.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Legal professionals with professional experience in international law.

  • Fluency in spoken and written French is mandatory (certification required for non-native speakers).

  • Ability to attend the programme in its entirety.

 

Application Procedure

  1. Complete the application form in French (typewritten).

  2. Provide aLetter of Transmission” signed by a senior official of your institution.

  3. Submit proof of French proficiency (e.g., diploma, language test certificate, or relevant work experience).

  4. Email the following documents to [ilfp@un.org]:

- A scanned copy of the signed original application (PDF or JPG).

- An electronic MS Word version of the application.

Selection Process

Selection is based on candidates' qualifications, professional duties, relevance to their work, geographic distribution, and gender balance. Preference will be given to applicants from Member States that have not recently participated in the programme.
