Fellowship Overview
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is a globally recognized leader in ocean science and engineering research. WHOI’s Summer Student Fellowship Program is designed to introduce outstanding undergraduates to the world of ocean research through hands-on independent projects. Fellows will work closely with WHOI scientists and engineers, gaining insight into cutting-edge marine science while contributing to meaningful research.
Research Projects
Fellows will engage in independent research projects under the mentorship of WHOI’s Scientific or Senior Technical Staff. Research topics include, but are not limited to:
Climate change and its impact on oceans
Marine robotics and ocean engineering
Oceanic ecosystems and biodiversity
Deep-sea exploration and geophysics
Marine chemistry and geochemistry
Coastal and marine policy
Students are encouraged to explore WHOI’s departments and connect with potential mentors in advance.

Fellowship Funding and Benefits
Stipend: $700 per week for 10-12 weeks
Travel Allowance: Up to $700 to cover round-trip transportation
Housing: Provided in shared WHOI accommodations
Visa Assistance: Support for international students obtaining a J-1 Visa
Networking: Interaction with leading researchers, graduate students, and professionals
Field Experience: Opportunities for hands-on training, including a one-day research cruise on WHOI’s research vessel R/V Tioga
Eligibility Criteria
Must be an undergraduate student entering their final summer before graduation
Students in three-year bachelor’s programs (e.g., UK) must be in their second year
Students in five-year combined bachelor’s/master’s programs must be in their third year
Preference for students in science and engineering disciplines
Open to U.S. and international students (visa sponsorship provided)
Members of underrepresented groups in ocean sciences are encouraged to apply
