Yokohama National University International Ph.D. Program in Economics: MEXT Scholarship 2025

The International Ph.D. Program (IPhD) in Economics at Yokohama National University (YNU) offers an exceptional opportunity for aspiring scholars. As part of Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) International Priority Graduate Programs (PGP), the IPhD program provides robust financial and academic support to selected candidates.

 

Yokohama National University MEXT Scholarship Benefits

MEXT allocates scholarships to three international Ph.D. students annually for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 academic years. Scholarship recipients receive:

  1. Monthly Stipend: ¥148,000 (subject to change) for up to three years, contingent upon maintaining excellent academic performance.

  2. Tuition Waiver: Complete exemption from tuition fees.

  3. Housing Support: Priority for furnished accommodations at Ooka International Residence (40-minute commute to YNU) or Tokiwadai International Residence (on-campus), with internet fees included in utility charges.

 

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Age Requirement: Born on or after April 2, 1990.

  • Academic Excellence: A minimum GPA of 2.30 (out of 3.00) in the last two years of academic study and the ability to maintain this level during the scholarship period.

  • Nationality: Must be a new arrival to Japan and belong to one of the priority regions specified by MEXT [PDF].

  • University Affiliation: Preferential consideration for graduates from institutions with academic exchange agreements with YNU.

 

Application Procedure

📁 Required Application Materials


  1. Japanese Government Scholarship Application Form: Provided upon notification (After online application for the IPhD program at YNU)

  2. Field of Study and Research Plan: Template provided upon notification.

  3. Recent Photograph: 4.5×3.5 cm, upper body, full-faced, taken within the last six months.

  4. Abstract of Thesis or Research Paper: Summary of past research work.

  5. Recommendation Letter: Must be from a high-ranking individual (e.g., dean or program director) and addressed to Dr. UMEHARA Izuru, President of YNU.


Submission Guidelines

ℹ️ Submit materials 1–4 digitally.


ℹ️ The recommendation letter (item 5) must be sent by postal mail to:

⚠️The recommendation letter must arrive no later than February 10, 2025.


🗓️ Application Deadlines

  • By Email: Submit materials by January 22, 2025.

  • By Registered Mail: Ensure recommendation letter delivery by February 10, 2025.


Selection Process and Notification

  1. Initial Notification: Applicants must indicate their intent to apply for the PGP scholarship during the online application for the IPhD program.

  2. Selection Announcement: YNU will inform the top three scholarship nominees and provide necessary forms after the entrance exam results.

  3. MEXT Nomination: By mid-February 2025, YNU will recommend nominees to MEXT.

  4. Final Decision: MEXT will announce selected scholarship recipients by the end of June 2025.

  5. Funding Commencement: Scholarship benefits begin in October 2025, coinciding with the recipients' arrival in Japan.
